| | Seven Ways to Get Your Family Laughing, Talking and Communicating With Each Other on Your Next Family Vacation
by Paula Farris
Vacation travel can be tiring and the distance of the road you are on can seem to stretch endlessly. Add a child or two (or three or four . . .) to that mixture and you may begin to wonder what is so vacation-like about family travel anyway. While I can’t do much about the endless hours (except to suggest you explore your own back yard next time!) here are seven ways to help the miles pass merrily.
- Choosing a Locale
Ask: If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? Is it hot or coldthere? What kind of clothing would you wear there? Would you need a lot of money to live there or just a little bit of money? - Powerful Disscussion
Discuss the meaning of the words loyalty, responsibility and power. What do they mean? Are they related to each other in any ways? Whom do you know that demonstrates any of these positive character qualities? - My Hometown
Tell your children about the town/city where you grew up. Try to include sights, sounds, smells, tastes. Make it very real to them. - Sticker Stock
Make up slogans that would make good bumper sticker sayings. - Where Are We Going?
When you are near your home have your children give you directions on how to get home from where you are. If they take you the wrong way ask them if they are sure that is the right way. If they are, see if they can find the way from where you end up. You may want to set a time limit for this one and have someone write down the series of turns, ie., right, right, left, right, etc., in case you get lost. - Burgers Anyone?
Let everyone choose a fast food chain to count and keep a running tally. Younger children can team up with someone who is older. The person or team with the most at the end of the day (or trip) wins. You may want to give a small prize or an honorary title such as ÒFabulous Fast Food Finder" - Then What Happened?!?
Tell your children a story where they are the main character and they go on an exciting adventure. Lead them up to the climax of the story and then ask them to finish it for you. Say things like, Then what happened? Did you plunge over the waterfall? Were you injured? Tell me, quickly! What happened? If they can’t think of an ending then you can finish it for them, but try to have them participate as much as possible.
