Top 10 Ways to Make Your Hotel Room Feel Like Home

By Paula Farris

Whether you are on an over night road trip or staying in a castle in Germany there is no place like home. Many people find it difficult to relax in a hotel room much less sleep. These tips will help you to better enjoy your stay.

  • Bring your own pillow! Not only will it provide an extra layer to prop you up in bed for reading or watching TV, but it will also provide the comfort you are used to for sleeping.

  • Put a very dim night light in the bathroom. Make sure it is not too bright as it will light up the whole room if it is. Having just enough light to get around in will help save your toes from going bump in the night.

  • Bring a clothespin or large safety pin to use to close the gap in the curtains. The only hotel room I have ever stayed in that didn’t have a peephole between the curtains had shutters on the windows!

  • If you will be staying more than two nights use the closet and drawers to unpack and put your luggage away neatly. Most hotel rooms are small. Having clothes, toiletries and miscellaneous items strewn about can make them seem even smaller.

  • Remember to pack everything you’ll need. Arriving after a long drive or flight only to find you’ve forgotten your pajamas can make relaxing difficult.

  • If you are on an extended trip bring a picture of your loved ones. A little taste of home will help you to feel a little like you are there.

  • Add some homey touches-- a vase with fresh flowers, a portable stereo with your favorite music, a favorite book on the nightstand. . .

  • Bring some of your favorite snack foods and drinks. When you get the urge for a midnight snack you won’t have to spend a small fortune on the vending machine or try to find the nearest convenience store.

  • Set the alarm clock to your favorite kind of station. It may take a little time and patience to find the right one, but waking up to classical music may just lull you back to sleep if you are usually a rock fan. (By the way, make sure the alarm clock is set to the right time so that you don’t wake up too early or too late.)

  • Store your valuables in the room safe or the hotel safe. Your hotel room is accessible to many people. Don’t tempt them by leaving valuable items in plain view.

It's those little things that bring us comfort and help us to relax. Whether you are traveling for business or for pleasure taking a few minutes to cozy up your surroundings will help you to enjoy your trip more.
