Staying Safe at the Wheel

By Paula Farris

Of all the places you could rest while traveling, behind the wheel is not one of them. Your life, the lives of your passengers, and the lives of other people on the road could be endangered if you are a drowsy driver.

Follow this advice to keep you alert, aware, and able to handle your vehicle safely all the way to your destination.

  • If at all possible travel with another person who can help with the driving. Taking turns behind the wheel will give you both a chance to rest.

  • Keep music on and the windows open a little bit to allow the air to circulate. If you are traveling with others engage in travel games or lively discussions to keep your mind alert.

  • Keep your windshield clean and your view through the other windows clear. Straining to see can tire your eyes quickly.

  • NEVER drink alcohol and then drive!

  • Avoid eating large meals while on the road. Opt instead for small frequent snacks. This will keep your blood sugar levels more even and help you to avoid drowsiness. Eating a carbohydrate and a protein together will also help to balance your blood sugar.

  • Try to avoid traveling in inclement weather. If you are along a stretch of road with small towns along the route, and you see a storm approaching, consider stopping for a meal, to visit a local museum or mall or even to stay the night. Driving through pouring rain can not only tire you out it can also add hours and increased danger to your trip.

Use these tips to help you stay awake and alert, but if you still find yourself to still be tired or sleepy PULL OFF THE ROAD AND REST! Better to be delayed even a few hours than to never arrive at your destination at all.

If you happen to be traveling with a furry friend this article will give you some tips to keep them safe on the road.
